The morning air in Ocean Beach had a different weight to it today – a little steamy, a little warmer than usual, carrying that distinct, electric shift in the atmosphere that only happens this time of year.
As I stepped out for my daily walk, the usual rhythm of the neighborhood was entirely rewritten. The traffic flows were different, choked with the unmistakable morning bustle of minivans, backpacks, and parents on a mission. The kids are officially going back to school.
Drawn by the energy, I wandered up toward the Ocean Beach Elementary school, expecting the standard, highly regimented ballet of morning drop-offs. Instead, I was met with something entirely unexpected. Echoing down the street was the unmistakable sound of a boombox pumping out upbeat dance music. And right there in the middle of the asphalt were two mothers wearing their bright orange vests, holding their stop signs high-not just directing traffic, but moving to the beat, dancing as they guided the children safely across the street.
This was enhanced with a golf cart full a kids with music blaring “We Will Rock You” followed by electric bikes with music blasting and a car seat on the back – all converging on the only side entrance to the school as people where lining up, all very high energy and full of excitement – I wanted to film it but felt I shouldn’t because of all the young children.
It was an truly amazing experience, high energy and exciting. In fact, I stopped dead in my tracks which I really never do just to watch and be part of it.
It was pure, unfiltered joy in action. In a world where mornings so often feel like a frantic race against the clock – a checklist of packed lunches, tied shoelaces, and rushed commutes – these two women the musical golf carts and electric bikes had completely flipped the script. They turned what is universally viewed as a mundane, stressful chore into a celebration. They weren’t just getting through the morning routine; they were elevating it, infusing the entire block with an infectious, positive energy that put a massive smile on the face of every kid and parent who walked past.
It makes you stop and ask a simple question: Why not?
How often do we trudge through our daily responsibilities, treating our routines like obligations to be endured rather than opportunities to create connection? Life gives us a thousand little chores every single week. We can rush through them with a frown, or we can choose to bring a little rhythm, a little music, and a lot of heart to the process.
Today’s crosswalk scene was a brilliant reminder that joy is often a choice. Sometimes, all it takes is a boombox, a pair of dancing shoes, and the willingness to make an ordinary morning unforgettable.
