This morning, I found myself in a bit of a scramble. I was leisurely enjoying my Sunday when I realized I had a dinner commitment that I had completely lost track of. As I dove into my calendar to check the date, I didn’t just find the dinner info – I spotted something else: a birthday.
It belonged to an old friend I hadn’t spoken to in quite a long time.
I didn’t overthink it. I didn’t add it to a “to-do” list for later in the week. I picked up the phone and dialed his number right then and there.
The reaction on the other end was pure elation. And honestly? I was just as thrilled. I found myself genuinely jumping up and down with excitement at the connection.
It reminded me of a concept I’ve written about before: the joy of giving.
We often think of “giving” in terms of grand gestures or formal commitments. But sometimes, the most powerful gift you can offer is simply your time and attention, delivered without delay. That tiny, immediate act of reaching out did more for my spirit this morning than any scheduled task could have.
My challenge to you today: If you are looking through your calendar and you see a birthday, an anniversary, or even just a reminder of someone you’ve been meaning to catch up with – call them. Do it right then and there.
Don’t wait for the “perfect” time. The perfect time is the moment you remember they matter. You will be surprised at how much more you get out of that connection than you put in.
How often do you let a “forgotten” calendar event turn into an opportunity to reconnect with a friend?
