Turn Off The Noise In 2018
Happy and healthy 2018 to all you incredible and extraordinary individuals! I didn’t want to begin the year with a traditional blog full of predictions, even though it can be fun to ponder those. Instead, I wanted to write about something that has stuck with me over the last month or so, and that is the idea of turning down all the noise that can distract “Doers” from accomplishing their important work.
I was out of the country recently as the wildfires raged in California. Later, as the rains and mudslides followed, I went to the traditional news outlets for information, but there wasn’t much. It just seemed like so much unimportant noise to me. In fact, the political noise just got more and more annoying.
It was a wake up call to me that 2018 is going to be a very noisy year. If we are going to accomplish all that we need to accomplish––as the incredible and extraordinary “Doers” doing the impossible ––we are going to have to shield ourselves from all of this noise.
Personally, I have already mentally turned off the political rhetoric and the personal noise. I am just not interested at all and not going to give it any of my energy or thought process.
As “Doers,” we have to maintain enough uncluttered space in our mind to allow for the creative problem solving that comes naturally to us. If your mind is filled with political noise or other superficial chaos that isn’t solving problems but (in my opinion) just confusing issues, you might not have the bandwidth to accomplish the important things.
So the question is, how are you going to avoid the unproductive “noise” that is surrounding us right now? Are you going to have a personal mantra to use instead of getting into the political noise and rhetoric? Mine is that I am only going to give my mindset to things that I can impact and be proactive in.
In any presentation of data, or even within facts meant to use for debate, I will ask myself if I can make a difference or make an impact. If I can, then I will engage. If I can’t, it is just noise and needs to be turned off.
Yep, 2018 is going to be a very noisy year, but the great news is that each of us is individually empowered to turn the noise off and empowered to make a difference.
