Today (Thursday) marks a very special and exciting occasion for those of us involved in working cooperatively with industry to make it more sustainable – the announcement of a precedent-setting agreement between the United Egg Producers and the Humane Society of the United States on the joint creation of a national humane standard for laying hens. What a huge accomplishment!
What has really impressed me is how progressive and proactive the U.S. egg industry has shown itself to be by working hand in hand with HSUS to develop this standard. It was an honor for me to be able to observe how many people contributed to this process, from individuals to the leadership of both organizations. My hope is that this effort will serve as an example of how industries around the world can join forces with organizations like HSUS to bring about positive changes – a paradigm for cooperation rather than confrontation.
Congrats to all those who contributed to these historic guidelines, which were announced in a news conference this morning at the U.S. Capitol Visitors Center. Details of this new standard can be found in the following press release.
